Awesome Tip: TikTok Is Now What MTV Was 20 Years Ago

Social media and the internet, in general, are still relatively new with exciting opportunities presenting themselves every day. Things that were virtually impossible only 20 years ago, like becoming a famous musician, actor, or comedian, have become practical realities thanks to platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. Gary sat down with songwriter Ryan Tedder to talk about TikTok’s impact on the music industry and how it is fundamentally changing the business. They compare TikTok to MTV in that they are both the primary places for distribution and discoverability at their respective times. TikTok now being accessible to everyone, has torn down the gatekeepers that MTV once had and has made becoming a professional artist more practical than ever. If your dreams involve becoming an acclaimed artist or entertainer, you need to watch this video and understand how lucky you are to be in this moment in time. Hopefully, this video gets you to take the leap into pursuing your dream! As always if you got any value from this, please like and subscribe to the channel… Enjoy!

  1. Great interview @garyvee and @ryanTanner. I’ve been watching Ryan on songland never really knowing who he was then realizing he was head a OneRepublic amazing human being extremely talented and I’ve been blown away by this interview. Great job

  2. I've been wanting to hear someone influencer in the music industry talking about TikTok! It's so refreshing to see how these songs gaining leverage on a daily basis and then seeing the moment it explodes into the mainstream. To the point where Spotify and Apple Music's top chart reflected the most used song of TikTok.

  3. HERNDON VIRGINIA, HERNDON HIGH SCHOOL- Gary I grew up with ANDY KRANACK great kid . I’m on my journey of Sobriety these past two and a half years and it’s been amazing . I’m now starting to document my journey and curiosity that sobriety has brought me . I Wanted to see if I could come intern for 48 hrs , shoot a week whatever just to learn . I’ll pay for my travel , hotel , etc myself it doesn’t matter where or win you say yes and I’ll book a flight tomorrow. You recently said “ you prettty much can make someone famous overnight “ I wanted to see if you were telling the truth on that ? My Niche is beautiful but also hard cause it’s the recovery world and not sure exactly how to monetize it with making sure people realize sober life is SO much better . It’s a niche and topic I can’t find much info on business wise and think if I can get my message out it may save some lives. Let me know Gary where and when and I’ll be there . 703-835-6461

  4. MTV 20 years ago was filled with Viva La Bam, Laguna Beach, The Osbournes, Punk'd, The Hills, Room Raiders & WWE Tough Enough and a shadow of it's former self, It was a joke and the spawn of the question how is it MTV when it doesn't play any music

  5. Hey Gary, love your content and channel. I think you should rethink your statement about how TikTok is like MTV 20 years ago, though, seriously. MTV was something that most people couldn't take their eyes off of, but with TikTok it's ONLY people who participate in TikTok. It's not ubiquitous like MTV was. Keep up the good work 🙂

  6. Being honest: I fell in love with GaryVee before COVID and into the quarantine in March then fell off the wagon. Like the romance died, but now I see his posts on instagram and snapchat still and see him post on Youtube and maybe click on a video. This is the first video I watched in a long time from you. I still love you and the whole Empire.
Thanks and love the interviews always.
From that, I started a habit of 5 minute meetings and phone calls with friends and networking people. <3
